Health

The Affenpinscher can generally be considered a healthy breed, which currently has no documented breed-related diseases.

What is noteworthy is knee joint defects, which can affect all dogs regardless of breed and size. Knee joint defects/Patella luxation means that the kneecap (patella) can be moved (dislocated) from its normal position. Two forms of patella luxation occur. The most common form is when the kneecap slips out of position and ends up on the inside (medially) of the knee joint. The other form is when the kneecap ends up on the outside of the knee joint (laterally).
Patella luxation is diagnosed by a veterinarian through palpation and is graded on a scale from 0–3 based on how the luxation occurs:
Grade 0 = Normal
Grade 1 = The patella can be dislocated manually but spontaneously returns to its normal position.
Grade 2 = The patella can be easily dislocated either manually or spontaneously and may remain dislocated.
Grade 3 = The patella is permanently dislocated.

The SKK breeding database, between the years 1990-2025, shows that 337 affenpinschers have been examined and of these, 318 have normal knee joints and 19 affenpinschers have remark on the knee joints.

Brachycephalic dogbreeds
The brachycephalic dogbreeds vary in size and body shape, from small, to medium-sized and large breeds. The common denominator for all brachycephalic dogbreeds is that they have a shorter muzzle and a wider skull. The Affenpinscher is one of the brachycephalic breeds. The standard states a "short" muzzle for the affenpinscher, without specifying the length. Generally speaking, the affenpinscher has about 1/3 muzzle and 2/3 skull.

Due to the reactions around the world regarding brachycephalic breeds, the Swedish Affenpinscher Club decided in 2022 to conduct examinations related to breathing- and temperatureregulation, where the dogs' breathing at rest/stress, the appearance of the nostrils, temperature regulation and the ratio between the length of the nose and the skull were graded.

Affenpinschers can undergo the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFG-S) test.
The test is open to all dogs, regardless of whether they are intended for breeding or have already been used for it. Young or old. The more of us who have our Affenpinschers tested, the better it is for the breed. Results are recorded in the Swedish Kennel Club’s (SKK) public database, Hunddata/Avelsdata.
